In this showcase series we feature the Oslo street photography of Henning S Pettersen.
Henning, how did you get started in photography?
I bought my first real camera in 2007, and the possibilities and freedom of a proper camera amazed me. Since then photography has been a bigger and bigger part of my life.
I early started photographing strangers in the streets of Oslo. After some time someone told me that this was a genre called street photography, and I started reading about the old masters. Today I always keep a camera with me, and almost every day I capture a number of scenes.
Can you tell us more about this series?
This is a series of silhouettes from Oslo. The abstraction and generalisation of the silhouettes is something that for long has fascinated me. Of course the composition of strong contrast images is also a very interesting field to explore.
This series is something I have worked on for some time, always on the lookout for the interesting light conditions and scenes. The uniqueness and realness of street photography is what makes me love it, you never know what might happen. But this is of course also what makes is difficult, often you miss your shot because it passes so quickly.
What equipment do you use for your street photography?
The specific equipment is of little importance for me. The important thing is to have a camera with you and to know how to use it. Street scenes come as quickly as they disappear, so there is no time to fondle with the various settings in the camera.
The silhouettes series is taken with my Canon 350D and Fujifilm X10. The compact Fujifilm x10 is always in my pocket, having a compact camera that you can bring with you everywhere is wonderful. I process my shots in Photoshop, I don’t do too much, but some minor adjustments and often black and white conversion.
Do you have any new series planned for the near future?
I work on some different stuff, but it is usually the unplanned series that are most interesting. Looking back at my old photos I often find themes that is present in a lot of my images, and I start a more focused work on that theme to complete the series. The silhouettes series is something that I might work more on.
