#1. The Libby Bag, by Kelly Moore
- Type: Shoulder Purse
- Material: Cambrio
- Dimensions: 17 x 6 x 12 in.
- Weight: 3.8 lbs.
- Closure: Zipper
- The high points: Spacious construction, plenty of exterior pockets, durable vegan materials, detachable shoulder strap, durable materials and fixtures
- The not-so: Uncomfortable shoulder strap, no exterior zipper, possible leather defects, heavy
There’s a lot to love about this classic flagship model from one of the industry’s most stylish manufacturers. This one is equally at home on a lengthy fashion shoot or at a classy wedding. It’s ideal for the photographer who needs to look polished without leaving any accessories at home.
Kelly Moore has been putting out killer designs for quite a while. This delightful shoulder bag is no exception. It’s hefty enough to stash all your gear. It is also elegant enough to stand in for your favorite designer purse.
Toss your gear into one of the five adjustable, padded interior dividers. Stash it in one of the six large exterior pockets. You’ll be on your way in style.
What do reviewers say about it?
The Libby’s spacious interior, roomy pockets, vibrant colors, and thoughtful detailing are popular.
This sophisticated shoulder purse easily accommodates heavy camera bodies and bulky lenses. Many buyers also put it to use as a briefcase, diaper bag, or book bag. Its durable materials and snazzy fixtures are a great combination.
A few reviewers were disappointed in the bag’s stitching quality. However, most had put it through the wringer for years without noticing any flaws or defects. Some were less impressed with the durability of its materials. There are a few reports of cracks in the exterior material.
What’s good?
There’s enough space for a full-size advanced or beginner DSLR, and four lenses up to 10 inches in length. In addition, it holds all your lighting and mounting accessories. There are additional pockets, one in the rear of the main compartment and one at the exterior back. These have plenty of room for your tablet and a 15-inch laptop. In fact, the Libby has more handy exterior pockets than any of our other picks. That makes it perfect for busy photographers who want their gear within reach.
Sling it over your shoulder with the detachable messenger bag strap. Opt for the top handle to keep things casual. Store valuable items like batteries and memory cards in the secure zippered pockets at the front. Tuck your phone and notepad into the side slip pockets. You’re good to go!
Too many women’s camera bags are long on function and short on fun. That’s why we adore this bag’s soft, colorful Cambrio exterior. It’s vegan and water- and abrasion-resistant. It also comes in three gorgeous colors. The juicy orange shade is irresistible.
What could be better?
The Libby’s construction is generally impeccable. A few minor flaws keep it from absolute perfection. Its zippers, while durable, aren’t always easy on the hands. Their rough edges sometimes snag delicate fabrics or rub against the skin. The material is occasionally prone to bubbling and cracking. This may happen around the thinner laptop storage pouch.
This version of the bag replaces its easygoing flat shoulder straps with a rigid, rounded design. The new style, while certainly more fashion-forward, sometimes causes the straps to roll off your arms.
At nearly four pounds and 17 inches tall, this bag is one of the bulkiest here. That’s not always a downside, but don’t invest in this bag if you want something unobtrusive. The Libby is also missing a zipper on the exterior back pocket. It’s great for makeup, but not secure enough for valuable items.
#2. The Hadley Pro Shoulder Bag, by Billingham
- Type: Shoulder Purse
- Material: Leather, FibreNyte canvas
- Dimensions: 13.8 x 4.8 x 11 in.
- Weight: 1.81 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle
- The high points: Vintage design, high-quality materials, spacious construction, durable stitching, organized interior
- The not-so: Uncomfortable shoulder strap, small, no top zipper
Svelte and sophisticated, this Billingham bag offers the ultimate in handcrafted luxury. This one includes hand-finished brass fixtures, sumptuous leather trim, and an impeccably styled interior. The Hadley Pro will transform even the most boring shoot into a sophisticated adventure.
This bag is lightweight and comfortable without ever looking cheap or feeling flimsy. In fact, the Hadley Pro’s durable construction stands up to almost anything. We also love the diversity of color options. That is a true rarity among durable camera bags. The creative storage solutions it offers are optimal.
Rich, high-quality leather and canvas combine to form this snappy shoulder bag. The exquisite colors—from burgundy to khaki—perfectly recall the European countryside.
What do reviewers say about it?
Reviewers were unanimous about one thing. The Hadley Pro is a beautiful, timeless classic. They loved its shapely pouches and pockets. In addition, its tough stitching and durable Velcro insert basket were bonuses. Dozens of reviewers mentioned that they’d been toting this bag around for a decade or more. In that time, no defects in the fixtures or imperfections in the leather occurred.
Although a few reviewers had some minor complaints, most still raved about it. The shoulder strap isn’t detachable, as you would expect from such a pricey bag. Figuring out its complicated insert basket isn’t simple.
Professionals and hobbyists alike report that its versatile design looks classy at any occasion. It also boasts plenty of room for their gear.
What’s good?
A signature front rain flap is held shut with handcrafted leather straps and brass detailing. This adds to its charm. You can even order exclusive color combinations like Imperial Blue, Neon Red, and the delightful Sulfur Yellow (which looks a lot prettier than it sounds).
Fortunately, the Hadley Pro is just as gorgeous on the inside as the outside. The included Pro Divider Set allows you to customize the interior. It is roomy enough to hold a DSLR, a 70-200 mm lens, and more. Adjust the brass buckles at the front to expand the slip pockets. Simply tuck your accessories into the roomy rear zip pouch.
An interior top divider protects your gear from rain and snow. A convenient camera insert slides into place with the press of a button. Sling up the shoulder strap for a long day of shooting. Grab the durable top handle if you’ve got to dash.
What could be better?
It is slightly more compact than a few of the other entries here. The Hadley Pro may not be the best choice for a photographer who likes to take the whole studio on the road. It’s also missing pads on the shoulder strap. That is is disappointing for such a pricey (and otherwise quite comfortable) bag. Also mysteriously absent is a top zipper. That would easily prevent smaller items from slipping out of the bag.
The Hadley Pro is also on the smaller and lighter side. It will easily fit most DSLR or mirrorless camera setups, but might struggle to accommodate a bulkier camera body or more than one zoom lens. So if you tote around lots of gear every day, it might be best to pass up this English gentleman for a roomier option.
#3. Leather Camera Bag, by Grafea
- Type: Shoulder Purse
- Material: Leather
- Dimensions: 8.2 x 14.1 x 7.6 in.
- Weight: 3.1 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle
- The high points: Quality materials, spacious interior, removable organizing insert, secure pockets, wonderful color
- The not-so: Cheap interior padding, bulky, difficult fixtures
Leather Camera Bag, by Grafea Another stunner hailing from the U.K., this gorgeous shoulder purse is the colorful vintage camera bag of your dreams. The high-end leather house Grafea has been crafting classic rucksacks and tote bags for years. This is their best-loved original camera bag, developed as an antidote to the throng of boring black totes and ugly nylon backpacks that often dominate the pro market.
And it’s no wonder that this bag has won over hundreds of devoted users across the globe. Patterned after vintage leather satchels, this chic tote was designed with busy photographers in mind. We especially love its sparkling color palette and adaptable interior layout.
A few small issues detract from the overall appeal, but this bag’s snappy styling and punchy color palette offer a distinctive flair you won’t find anywhere else.
What do reviewers say about it?
Reviewers adore the Grafea Camera Bag’s handsome construction and stylish detailing. They have plenty of praise for its highly adjustable interior divider, which holds gear snugly in place without using up too much space.
While almost all reviewers rave about the bag’s tough leather, many wish for a more flexible and accommodating material in its side and back pockets. Several also note that the thickness of the material make the bag heavier than is necessary or convenient. In addition, more than a few reviewers complain that the long, thin seam on the bottom of the bag creates an unnecessary weak spot in its otherwise tough leather exterior.
What’s good?
What really sets this classic leather bag apart from the crowd is its creamy full-grain leather and the variety of vibrant colors available. From sober, professional options like glossy caramel and soft grey to quirky shades like neon yellow, scrumptious pink, or delicate lilac, everyone is sure to find their favorite—or something very close to it.
Unbuckle the front fastener to find a capacious storage chamber. Inside, a fitted and padded nylon insert with two configurable dividers gives you plenty of room to stash your gear. Nestle your DSLR and accessory kit in the divider, or just ditch the insert to take advantage of the bag’s surprisingly ample storage space.
Both side pockets are secured with a buckle, as well, giving you a cozy place to store your wallet, cell phone, or other valuables. There’s a magazine pouch in the back that’s perfect for paperwork, plus a zippered pocket to keep your valuables away from prying eyes.
What could be better?
Although this Grafea bag has plenty of thick interior padding, it’s filled with a paper material rather than the high-density foam used by most manufacturers. That is a huge weak spot in an otherwise dependable accessory, and could expose expensive gear to unnecessary jolts and jumbles.
Its front buckle is clumsy and bulky, designed more for fashion than function. This makes it frustratingly difficult to grab your gear quickly or tuck it away inconspicuously at an event. Expect to spend a minute or so grappling with the leather strap, which is also slightly stiffer than we would prefer.
Though this bag is rigid enough to stand sturdily on its own, that chunky cube design can make travel a pain.
#4. The Wyndham Street, by Johansen
- Type: Tote Bag
- Material: Leather
- Dimensions: 18 x 8 x 9 in.
- Weight: 4.5 lbs.
- Closure: Zipper
- The high points: Stylish slouch design, interchangeable straps, quick-access pockets, organized interior, stable base
- The not-so: Flawed fixtures, no color options, heavy, less durable materials
The Wyndham Street, by Johansen Jo Totes offers so many beautifully crafted designer camera bags that it’s difficult to choose just one (or two, or three). In the end, we can’t live without this lush, fashionable Wyndham Street tote bag, which moves effortlessly between busy shoots and fun nights on the town.
We love its sleek matte texture and its delightfully casual silhouette, as well as the ease with which it adapts to different shooting situations. Although it’s designed to store a full DSLR kit, it also works just as well for weekend getaways or long car trips as it does for lengthy photo shoots.
The Wyndham Street’s durable leather exterior and simple, elegant design are true winners. We’re also head-over-heels for its immaculate detailing, particularly the delicate brushed gold hardware.
What do reviewers say about it?
It’s frustrating to tote around a heavy bag on a needlessly thin, purse-style strap, so many reviewers had great things to say about the Wyndham Street’s interchangeable strap system. The bag features a two-inch nylon strap, attached with sturdy carabiners, for days when you’d rather swap style for convenience and comfort. When the shoot is over, reviewers report that it’s easy to unclip the heavy-duty strap and reattach the standard faux leather strap.
They also enjoyed the blend of zippered and open pockets on the interior, as well as the quick-access mesh pouches on either side of the divider. From the reviews, it seems that most buyers end up using the Wyndham Street for a whole range of occasions and uses.
What’s good?
If you’ve ever wanted to throw your camera, clothes, and accessories into one big tote for a big weekend trip, then here’s your chance. The Wyndham’s chic slouch design makes it look like any other high-end weekend tote. Inside, however, you’ll find a modular padded divider that keeps all your belongings organized.
You can stash your camera gear in one section and your toiletry bags in the other, while still having plenty of room for snacks. (What more could a girl ask for?) You can even lift the divider out of the bag to use it as a freestanding, hold-all container.
The exterior features two conveniently placed mesh pockets that are perfect for keys, cell phones, or other items you’ll be reaching for all day. And since this bag has a wide base, you’ll never need to worry about it tipping over and spilling your valuables all over the floor.
The Wyndham Street is built from a soft, pliable faux leather in a cool heather gray shade. While not the most exciting color palette on this list, it’s a classic tone that harmonizes perfectly with almost any ensemble.
What could be better?
Our biggest complaint is that it’s quite difficult to take full advantage of the Wyndham Street’s spacious interior, simply because its zipper doesn’t extend to the edges of the bag. Expect to spend some time groping around inside before you find the lens or battery that you’re trying to track down.
Unlike several of the entries on this list, you won’t find a cool range of color options to customize this bag. The featured color is gorgeous—and several other lush shades were sold not long ago—but it’s unfortunate that more options aren’t currently available.
Its faux suede isn’t the most durable material on the market. Compared to genuine treated leather or hardy canvas, it might not provide the same level of longevity or the same dogged resistance to water and stains. Overall, the Wyndham Street is a classy, stylish tote that doubles well as a hobby camera bag, but might not be the smartest choice for a professional.
#5. The Brixton, By ONA
- Type: Messenger Bag
- Material: Full-grain leather, waxed canvas
- Dimensions: 13.5 x 10.5 x 5 in.
- Weight: 3.1 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle
- The high points: Premium materials, gorgeous color options, handcrafted details, spacious interior
- The not-so: Uncomfortable shoulder strap, unbalanced design, awkward fixtures and dividers
There are hundreds of takes on the classic messenger cross-body bag. Very few pull them off the same level of charm and poise as this entry from ONA.
Crafted from imported Italian leather and creamy waxed canvas, the Brixton is one of ONA’s most perennially popular bags, with good reason. Its reserved colors and sober brass fixtures exude a retro, aristocratic charm that stand out in any crowd. However, it doesn’t sacrifice space for style, since inside you’ll find plenty of adjustable, thickly padded dividers.
Regardless of the occasion, you’re certain to feel like a true artist when you hit the town with this classy bag slung over your shoulder.
What do reviewers say about it?
Most reviewers loved the Brixton’s stable design and impeccably high-quality materials. They also appreciated its many thoughtfully placed details, such as the weather flaps above the open side pockets and the sturdy, hand-stitched exterior pockets.
Although most reviewers are unanimous in their adoration of the Brixton’s superb materials and handcrafted quality, a few were left disappointed by a few design flaws. Many reported that the bag’s removable dividers are clumsy and aggravating, and that its interior doesn’t have enough pockets to store delicate items or padding to properly cushion pricey gear.
Others added that the bag’s exterior buckles are simply too difficult to maneuver, which makes accessing gear quickly much more of a hassle.
What’s good?
The Brixton combines two fabulous traditional materials—namely, flexible full-grain leather and waxed canvas—to form a robust, hardy package. This is a bag that is meant to be used for years and handed down to your kids—and maybe even their kids.
It effortlessly accommodates a DSLR camera, along with three or four lenses and a 13-inch laptop. Four removable dividers allow you to partition the bag’s interior precisely as you please, while two front buckle pockets provide a cozy resting place for all your SD cards, batteries, and personal items.
The Brixton comes in eight delectable (and wonderfully named) shades, from the rich Antique Cognac to the moody Dark Truffle and the sophisticated Smoke Grey. The Brixton is also available in sturdy nylon and full leather, although in our opinion neither one has the same appeal as this two-tone version. No matter which shade you choose, it’s sure to look incredibly svelte and sophisticated with any outfit.
What could be better?
If you’re not easily enraptured with vintage charm, then some of the Brixton’s more apparent design flaws might end the honeymoon period before it has even begun.
First off, the bag is one of the heaviest on this list, even before you load it up with all your gear and personals. The thick leather isn’t easy on the scale, so expect to be toting around more than a dozen pounds once you’ve filled it to the top.
Like many of the other camera bags on the market today, the Brixton doesn’t quite nail the shoulder strap design. It’s a little too thin and a little too long, and the padding is a little too thin to actually comfort your aching shoulder bones. Since its handle is attached to the back panel rather than the top of the flap, the bag tips forward precariously when it’s picked up there. Neither strap is removable, a convenience that comes standard on much less expensive bags.
#6. The Backpack, by Compagnon
- Type: Backpack
- Material: Bull leather, waxed canvas
- Dimensions: 19.5 x 12.6 x 8.6 in.
- Weight: 4.4 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle/Zipper
- The high points: Cool color combinations, spacious interior, durable materials, tough fixtures
- The not-so: No rain cover, expensive
The Backpack, by Compagnon For lengthy road trips and busy street shoots, nothing really beats a DSLR backpack. Unfortunately, it can be tough to find a pack that holds everything you’ll need without looking completely nerdy or boring.
We’ve finally found an answer. This backpack, handcrafted by Compagnon, is fashioned from a timeless blend of bull leather and colorful waxed canvas. It’s equally at home on the nature trail and at a fashion-forward urban photo shoot.
Like many of Compagnon’s classic bags, this satchel is essentially a professional-quality camera bag that’s masquerading as a trendy and timeless backpack. You’re sure to fall in love with its spacious interior, efficient packing system, and tough-as-nails fixtures. Its high-quality materials stand up to almost any test, and lend an extra touch of elegance.
What do reviewers say about it?
Slick and undeniably cool, the Compagnon Backpack wins almost everyone over with its vintage styling and rugged construction.
Reviewers heaped praise on the many color combinations available, from a whimsical mustard-and-light brown blend to a striking orange-and-charcoal mix. The interior padding is thick enough to offer peace of mind, yet modest enough that it doesn’t pile a lot of weight on your back. They also loved the mesh exterior pockets, reporting that they did an excellent job of securing small belongings.
They also appreciated this backpack’s impressive carrying capacity, many mentioning that it was easy to pack and felt far more comfortable than bags of a comparable weight. The thick bull leather earned compliments for its pre-worn charm, while the stainless steel rings and COBRA nylon fixtures impressed with their tough durability.
What’s good?
Endlessly dependable yet exceptionally elegant, this bag shows off its incredible quality at every turn. Both the canvas and the leather will gain a glowing patina from use, growing even more beautiful with age. It’s sure to become a family heirloom—if you can bring yourself to pass it on.
It’s roomy enough for two full-frame DSLR bodies, up to seven lenses, and all the accessories you could ever need. Travel tripods slot effortlessly into the external loops, mesh pockets securely conceal wallets and phones, and the roll top pouch is a perfect storage spot for everything from chargers to hard drives. There’s even a separate compartment that secures a 15-inch laptop with a handy leather clasp and press stud.
Everyone wants an “active” backpack, but very few brands are up to the challenge of designing one. Thankfully, flexible materials and ergonomic designs mean that this backpack remains wonderfully comfortable, even when fully loaded up with all your gear and accessories. An adjustable chest strap and removable waist belt keep the bag secure while you hike or bike.
What could be better?
We have relatively few complaints about this Compagnon bag, but there are a few minor tweaks that would make it the ultimate adventure rucksack.
This bag is missing a few features that come standard on many similarly priced camera packs, such as a rain cover and an easy-access side opening. It’s quite heavy and large, and won’t be the best choice if you’re traveling light or just popping out for a quick shoot.
It’s also one of the priciest entries on our list, probably because of the plentiful hand stitching and expensive double-padded German leather. If you’re willing to make the initial investment, however, you’ll receive a bag that sticks with you for life.
#7. The Collins, by Kelly Moore
- Type: Tote Bag
- Material: Leather, canvas
- Dimensions: 15.5 x 5.5 x 17 in.
- Weight: 2.43 lbs.
- Closure: Zipper
- The high points: Versatile construction, high-end materials, spacious interior, plenty of pockets, built-in wallet
- The not-so: Difficult to pack, small pockets, flimsy straps, unstable construction
Here’s another of our favorites from the perennially stylish Kelly Moore brand. Naturally cool and undeniably comfortable, the Collins’ claim to fame lies in its easy convertible design.
Fill it to the brim to use it as a shoulder purse, or toss a few essentials into the leather base and fold over its canvas top to transform it into a messenger bag. Unlike many convertible bags, the Collins manages to look effortlessly natural in both styles. It’s essentially the “casual black dress” of camera bags.
It’s also the perfect size for international travel, tucking under your plane seat or slotting easily into the carry-on compartment. Like most premium bags, the Collins boasts a combination of robust full-grain leather and sleek waxed canvas. Complemented by hand-stitched seams and durable fixtures, those materials are guaranteed to outlive almost everything else in your wardrobe.
What do reviewers say about it?
Reviewers raved about the Collins’ impeccable craftsmanship and stunning materials. They particularly loved its easy-to-use convertible design, neat modular interior, and the accessible wallet panel, which keeps essentials within reach at all times.
A few reviewers did note that getting all their lenses and accessories to fit inside this bag sometimes felt like solving an elaborate puzzle. It’s not as large as some of the other entries on this list, so it might take a bit more creativity to fit everything you’ll need for your shoot. On the upside, many reviewers said that the Collins is the perfect size for travel and that it fits snugly under a car seat or into an overhead compartment.
What’s good?
The Collins’ charming, understated good looks could single-handedly earn it a spot on this list. Thankfully, it’s also functional enough to compete with the most rugged pro camera bags on the market.
Inside, you’ll find sturdy, generously padded dividers to keep your camera body, lenses, accessories, and laptop snugly in place. There is a bit of additional padding on the bottom and sides for extra protection. The fold-over flap holds everything in place during the messenger style, and a top zipper keeps everything contained if you fill this bag to the brim.
You won’t need to carry a wallet with the Collins in tow, since its rear exterior panel features six credit card slots, a zippered pocket, and a mesh pouch sized to fit a cell phone, car keys, or other personal items. Double front pockets, while unsecured, are small enough to safely conceal any valuables.
What could be better?
Although the Collins is surprisingly well-equipped, it certainly won’t be perfect for everyone. If you prefer to keep valuables very close at hand, then the exterior wallet panel probably won’t put your mind at ease.
Plus, some of the pockets and pouches, like the bespoke credit card slots, are almost too snug for the items they are designed to fit. While the leather hand straps are flat and comfortable to hold, they could be a little thicker. Those are minor issues, but they might get in the way of a perfect experience.
From a design perspective, the Collins sacrifices a sturdy base for its roomy height. That means that it’s narrow, slightly unstable, and not always capable of standing upright by itself. Since it doesn’t have a side access panel, you might spend some time digging through the contents to find the accessory that you need.
#8. The Amsterdam, by Epiphanie
- Type: Backpack
- Material: Full-grain leather, waxed canvas
- Dimensions: 12 x 5.5 x 19.5 in.
- Weight: 2 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle/Zipper
- The high points: Awesome color options, premium materials, versatile organization, lightweight
- The not-so: Flimsy fixtures, uncomfortable shoulder straps, little structural support
The Amsterdam, by Epiphanie This cool and collected backpack borrows its styling from European classics and its modular design from professional quality
camera bags. We’re huge fans of its premium full-grain leather, crisp detailing, and remarkably sturdy construction.
The Amsterdam is incredibly lightweight and compact enough to sit comfortably on any torso. It is also spacious enough to store everything you will need. At well under $200, it’s one of the most affordable high-end camera backpacks on the market right now. However, it never cheapens its quality or craftsmanship.
Its versatile construction and adaptable storage design keep you from misplacing any essentials, while its durable fixtures provide long-lasting quality.
What do reviewers say about it?
Reviewers are unanimous in their adoration of the Amsterdam backpack’s rich, creamy leather. It holds its shape admirably well and stands up to any weather. Several commented that the leather becomes more pliable after many wears, and that it gains a lush patina after a few months of use.
They also mention that it’s great for transitioning from photography outings to other activities. Many reviewers end up using the bag as a carry-all rucksack, as a school pack, or even as a diaper bag. This is partly due to its lightweight construction, which moves effortlessly from work to play, and partly due to its casual, laid-back styling.
What’s good?
We love that the Amsterdam is compact, but surprisingly spacious. It comfortably fits a 13-inch laptop, an iPad or tablet, several medium-sized lenses (or one 70-200 mm zoom lens), and a camera body with a kit lens. You can lift out the fully removable camera basket to easily pack and organize your gear, or unzip the top flap pocket to toss in your battery pack. Side slip pockets are the perfect size to keep a wallet, cell phone, or passport in an easily accessible place.
We’re also big fans of the gorgeous canvas shades that they’ve paired with the rich brown leather, from robust coffee to vibrant plum and crisp teal. Those colors are striking enough to stand out in a crowd, but neutral enough to match flawlessly with any outfit.
What could be better?
Although the Amsterdam is quite comfortable on short trips, it doesn’t have the degree of structural support that you would hope for in such a well-equipped pack. It’s missing a waist and chest strap, and its shoulder straps don’t offer the same cushy comfort as the Compagnon bag described above.
As some reviewers mentioned, the hardware quality on this backpack also leaves something to be desired. Some zippers occasionally snag, some buttons have a bit too much play, and some buckles don’t hold up to the wear and tear of everyday use. That’s a huge disappointment from a bag that boasts such exceptional craftsmanship in nearly every other respect.
#9. The 50/50 Bowery Bag, by ONA
- Type: Shoulder Purse
- Material: Full-grain leather, waxed canvas
- Dimensions: 10.5 x 7 x 4 in.
- Weight: 1.8 lbs.
- Closure: Buckle/Zipper
- The high points: Vintage styling, spacious interior, versatile design, lightweight, unique color options, durable materials
- The not-so: Expensive, small, few exterior pockets
We just couldn’t resist putting another classic bag from ONA onto this list. The Bowery reinvigorates one of the brand’s most popular cross-body designs with a blench of durable full-grain leather and sleek, water-resistant canvas.
Surprisingly lightweight and deceptively rugged, the Bowery takes its cue from the canister-style bags of the mid-1900s. You can choose from several designs, including the classic Bowery (which is built from sturdy full-grain leather), the anniversary edition (which incorporates lovely weatherproof canvas), and the 50/50 Bowery (which balances the two in perfect harmony). We particularly love some of the groovier materials, like camouflage and nylon.
Every style incorporates the same antique brass hardware and delicate, handcrafted pleating. Opt for the lovely cream-and-camel color blend for a vintage feel, or turn heads with a striking monochrome blue or burgundy.
What do reviewers say about it?
Above all else, reviewers prized the Bowery’s versatile construction and down-to-earth good looks. They reported that while this bag isn’t ideal for large gear kits or very lengthy shoots, it adapts to almost every other situation with ease.
They also loved its five exterior pockets, which broaden the storage possibilities without bulking up the bag to an excessive degree. Some were disappointed that such a compact bag carried such a large price tag, but others were comfortable shelling out more cash for a bag that would last many years to come.
What’s good?
The 50/50 Bowery looks clean and compact, but that svelte exterior conceals a surprising amount of storage space. Plush closed-cell foam provides a gentle resting place for a camera body, one or two lenses, and all the accessories and personal items you could need.
More than anything else, the Bowery’s versatility won us over. Sure, you can pack it full and sling it over your shoulder for those long shoots. But you can also unclip the detachable shoulder strap to use it as a stand-alone storage compartment, or tuck it inside a larger bag to give your gear an extra layer of protection. Stocking up for an overseas jaunt or heading to the beach for a day? The Bowery’s limber design can accommodate both with ease.
What could be better?
Despite its clever design, the Bowery still doesn’t deliver the same storage capacity as most of the other bags on this list. It’s probably not the right choice for the photographer who prefers to carry all their gear, plus the kitchen sink, on every outing. The same compactness that makes it an ideal bag for travel cameras & their gear, rules it out for lengthy shoots or large gear kits.
As you might expect from its reduced frame, the Bowery doesn’t boast the same variety of exterior pockets as many comparably priced bags. That means you’ll probably be unbuckling its clasp every few minutes, even when you just want to check your text messages.
#10. The Alice, by Le Momi
- Type: Shoulder Purse
- Material: Full-grain leather, waxed canvas
- Dimensions: 13 x 5.25 x 9.5 in.

The Alice, by Le Momi With its curvy, feminine design and exquisite styling, the Alice is the perfect bag to round out our Top Ten list. This groovy messenger-style purse has plenty of room for all the essentials, and its flexible faux leather exterior defends your gear from dirt and dampness. The leather comes in four punchy, delightful colors, from soft seafoam green to glam cherry red and glowing summer ochre.
Large enough to comfortably store a DSLR body, two medium-sized lenses, and an assortment of electronics and personal items, the Alice is sure to delight any hobbyist who wants to keep her gear at hand and her style on point. And at well under $200, the price will keep everyone in the family happy.
What do reviewers say about it?
Reviewers loved the Alice’s versatile and dependable design, doling out high praise for the metal feet and weighted bottom that keep it firmly planted, even on wobbly terrain. They also adored the magnet top closure, which is perfect for speedy one-handed access.
Although a few reviewers weren’t crazy about it, most appreciated the front zipper pocket with three built-in SD card slots and four small pouches for business or credit cards. Several users pointed out that the pocket’s understated pleating allows it to open wider and store more items.
The creamy beige interior earned praise not only for its classy appearance, but also because it makes it much easier to find small items like car keys and memory cards.
What’s good?
The Alice exudes a boho charm reminiscent of a sunny Caribbean island. Two side slip pockets and a zippered back pocket are the perfect place to stash all your essentials. When you’re ready to hit the road, the adjustable, detachable cross-body strap will rest comfortably on your shoulder. For shorter trips, the rounded handles fit snugly into your hand.
Cushioned padding lines every interior wall, as well as the bag’s wide base. Adjust the padded interior dividers to customize your organization and create up to five separate storage sections. Another small yet thoughtful detail is the inclusion of a gentle nylon zipper, which won’t scratch lenses or snag on delicate fabrics.
What could be better?
Although the Alice’s faux leather exterior is tough and weather-resistant, it probably won’t hold up like traditional full-grain leather or canvas. Along with the silver-plated fixtures, it also gives this bag a cheaper appearance than many of the other entries on this list.
The side slip pockets are handy, but not quite large enough to fit anything larger than lipstick or a very slim wallet. And while the interior dividers are easy to adjust, they won’t accommodate a large kit, no matter how much you move them around. All in all, the Alice is great for hobby photographers who want to incorporate some colorful flair into their shoots.
